Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Aug. 8.

Two influential jazz bandleaders were born this day, Lucky Millinder in 1900 in Anniston, Ala., and Benny Carter in New York City in 1907.

Jazz and blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon was born this day in 1923 in Gurdon, Ark. Witherspoon was one of the first singers who managed to adapt blues shouting to the harmonic and rhythmic demands of modern jazz styles.

Trombonist Urbie Green was born this day in 1926 in Mobile, Ala.

On this day in 1922, trumpeter Louis Armstrong left his New Orleans hometown for Chicago to join the band of Joe "King" Oliver. He stayed for two years before going out on his own and forever changing the shape of jazz.

On this day in 1975, saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley died from stroke. He was 46.

The Steve Lacy-Roswell Rudd quartet is at Iridium this week.

Singer Luciana Souza is at the Jazz Standard with guitarist Romero Lubambo tonight, followed by three nights with her quintet. Buster Williams' quartet is at Birdland tonight through Saturday. Pianist Anthony Wonsey's trio is at the Jazz Gallery tonight.

John O'Gallagher is at the Cornelia Street Cafe tonight and Chris Cheek is at Detour. Hiram Bullock performs tonight in Battery Park City. Carol Sudhalter's Astoria Big Band is at the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing tonight.

There's a flute summit tonight at Scullers in Boston with Frank Wess, Holly Hoffman and Ali Ryerson. Singer Shelley Neill is at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass. Bob Sinicrope and the World Leaders are at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge tonight.

Roberto Ocasio's Tropical Jam is at the Akron, Ohio, Art Museum tonight.

In and around Chicago... the Bill Porter Orchestra with Rich Fudoli is at Green Dolphin Street. Alan Gresik's Swing Shift Orchestra is at the Green Mill. Jeff "Tain" Watts' band is at the Jazz Showcase this week. Erwin Helfer and the Chicago Boogie Ensemble are at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. There's a jam session with John Bany, Don Stille and Charles Braugham tonight at The Chambers in Niles, Ill. The Jeff Parker trio is at Pete Miller's Steakhouse in Evanston. John Wright is at Philander's in Oak Park.

In New Orleans... Rebecca Barry is at Dos Jefes tonight. The David Dunbar trio is at El Matador. The Evan Howard band and Geoff Green are at the Funky Butt. Louis Ford is at Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at Le Bon Temps Roule. The Brice Winston trio and Roland Guerin trio are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. The Crescent City Joymakers with Lloyd Washington are at Palm Court. Dave Bartholomew leads tonight's band at Preservation Hall. Betsy Braud and the Jazz Nurse Prescription are at Snug Harbor. The Hot Club of New Orleans and the Jazz Band featuring Ben Schenk are at the Spotted Cat. Brian Seeger's Jazz Hang is at the Station House Grill. Willie Metcalf is at Sweet Lorraine.

On the California jazz scene... the Banda Brothers Latin Jazz Sextet is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton tonight. Susie Hansen's Latin Jazz Band is at Duarte Park in Duarte tonight... Pianist Dave Burrell and bassist William Parker are at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight. The Cuban dance band Maraca is at Yoshi's in Oakland tonight through Sunday. In San Francisco, Los Angeles saxophonist Bruce Escovitz is at Jazz at Pearl's tonight with the Vince Lateano trio. The AT&T San Jose Jazz Festival tonight features R&B artist Michael Spiderman on center stage.

Brad Mehldau and Dee Dee Bridgewater are featured tonight at Jazz en Marciac, France.
