Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Two influential jazz bandleaders were born this day, Lucky Millinder in 1900 in Anniston, Ala., and Benny Carter in New York City in 1907.

Jazz and blues singer Jimmy Witherspoon was born this day in 1923 in Gurdon, Ark. Witherspoon was one of the first singers who managed to adapt blues shouting to the harmonic and rhythmic demands of modern jazz styles.


Trombonist Urbie Green was born this day in 1926 in Mobile, Ala.


On this day in 1922, trumpeter Louis Armstrong left his New Orleans hometown for Chicago to join the band of Joe "King" Oliver. He stayed for two years before going out on his own and forever changing the shape of jazz.


On this day in 1975, saxophonist Julian "Cannonball" Adderley died from stroke. He was 46.

John O'Gallagher is at the Cornelia Street Cafe tonight and Chris Cheek is at Detour. Hiram Bullock performs tonight in Battery Park City. Carol Sudhalter's Astoria Big Band is at the Queens Botanical Garden in Flushing tonight.


There's a flute summit tonight at Scullers in Boston with Frank Wess, Holly Hoffman and Ali Ryerson. Singer Shelley Neill is at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass. Bob Sinicrope and the World Leaders are at Ryles jazz club in Cambridge tonight.


Roberto Ocasio's Tropical Jam is at the Akron, Ohio, Art Museum tonight.
