, Aug. 6 (UPI) -- SPRINGSTEEN TOPS IN ENGLAND

Bruce Springsteen's "The Rising" (Columbia) debuted at No. 1 on the British album chart and is expected to follow suit in the United States when strong opening-week numbers are counted. "The Rising," Springsteen's first new studio set since 1995's "The Ghost of Tom Joad," pushed the Red Hot Chili Peppers' "By The Way" (Warner Bros.) out of the top spot after a three-week run. Springsteen now has hit No. 1 in the United Kingdom with five albums dating back to 1984's "Born in the U.S.A." The others are "Tunnel of Love" (1987), "Human Touch" (1992), and "Greatest Hits" (1995).

DEAD VERY MUCH ALIVE

Grateful Dead fans left the two-night "Terrapin Station" reunion concerts at Alpine Valley convinced their favorites are on the road again. The Other Ones, made up of the surviving members of the Grateful Dead with guitarist Jimmy Herring replacing Jerry Garcia, who died in 1995, played two nights of memorable music and fans obeyed directives not to swarm the East Troy, Wis., site without tickets. The band now will proceed with its previously announced tour.
