Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Singer Eddie Jefferson was born this day in 1918 in Pittsburgh. He was the pioneer of vocalese, the artful practice of creating lyrics to fit recorded instrumental solos on classic jazz tunes. Jefferson died in May 1979 after he was shot in front of a Detroit nightclub where he was performing.

Trumpeter Charlie Shavers was born this day in 1917 in New York. He was the heart and soul of the John Kirby band from 1938 to 1944 before moving to the Tommy Dorsey band for about 11 years.


On this day in 1944, Charlie Barnet recorded "Skyliner" for the Decca label.


On this day in 2001, the city of New Orleans opened a three-day celebration of Louis Armstrong's centennial. The birthplace of jazz also was the birthplace of the man who had a more profound impact on jazz than any other single individual. The weekend included a centennial conference, a Satchmo-inspired music festival, seminars and musical demonstrations, children's activities, a pub-crawl, a jazz mass and a New Orleans second-line parade.

On the New York jazz scene... the Ravi Coltrane quartet is at Iridium this week. The Vinicius Cantuaria band is at the Jazz Standard through Sunday. Pianist Bruce Barth is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday with his trio featuring drummer Al Foster and bassist Ugonna Okegwo. Singer Philip Bailey's band is at the Blue Note all week. The Tom Harrell Quintet is at Birdland tonight. Jill Allen and the Gary Wofsey quintet are at The Garage. Ralph Peterson's Fo'tet, augmented with clarinetist Don Byron, is at the Jazz Gallery tonight, followed by a late night -- 1 a.m. to 4 a.m. -- performance by trumpeter Duane Eubanks' band.

Dianne Reeves, Arturo Sandoval and Tom Scott are at the Long Island Summer Festival at Planting Fields Arboretum in Oyster Bay. Just north of New York City, the Caramoor Music Festival in Katonah holds the first of its two jazz festival Saturdays with the Phil Woods quintet, Marian McPartland trio, Rodney Kendrick, James Carter trio and the Ron Carter trio. The Jazz Forum All-Stars are at Peekskill's Celebration 2002 on the town's Riverfront Green this afternoon. Singer Linda Ciofalo is at the Soundview Restaurant in Greenport tonight.

Connecticut's Litchfield Jazz Festival at the Goshen County includes the Mingus Big Band, Toots Thielemans, Mary Stallings, the Eric Reed trio, Antoine Silverman, Bill Charlap trio and the John Benitez quartet today. The festival winds down Sunday with Paquito D'Rivera, Kenny Werner and the Brussels Jazz Orchestra, Kenny Rankin, Danilo Perez, Tom Harrell quintet and Eric Alexander quartet. On the Ohio jazz scene... guitarist Al Krasel, Horns-N-Things and Roberto Ocasio's Tropical Jam perform today at "Vintage Ohio" at Lake Farmpark in Kirtland. Ron Levy is at the Summer Hookah at Nelson Ledges this afternoon.


Los Gatos are at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight.


Bruce Hornsby is at Chastain Park Amphitheater in Atlanta tonight.


On the Chicago jazz scene... Rooftop Rhythms, a fundraising party for the Asian American Jazz Festival, takes place this evening with Tatsu Aoki's Rooted: Origins of Now, tbe Wabi Seiji Yuguchi Blues Band, taiko drummers and a silent auction.

There's a Sabertooth After Hours Jazz Party late tonight at the Green Mill. Roy Haynes' quartet is at the Jazz Showcase. Bopology is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Rankinfyle is at Philander's in Oak Park tonight.

In New Orleans... much of the Crescent City's musical focus is on the legacy of native son Louis Armstrong this weekend as the second annual Satchmo SummerFest continues. Today's four stages throughout the French Quarter feature the Albert Ankrum Project, Topsy Chapman, the Donald Harrison quartet, Dejean's Olympia Brass Band, Mahogany Brass Band, New Birth Brass Band, Duke Heitger's Steamboat Stompers, the Dukes of Dixieland, and Wendell Brunious and the New Orleans Allstars.

Elsewhere, Rob Wagner is at the Blue Nile tonight. Samirah Evans is at the Bombay Club. Ellen Smith and Friends are at Donna's. Wendell Brunious is at Dos Jefes. Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. The Devin Phillips quartet and Li'l Stooges Brass Band are at the Funky Butt tonight. Louis Ford and Topsy Chapman are at Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's casino.

Kim Prevost and Bill Solley bring their trio to Le Salon at Windsor Court. Rhodes Spedale and Dave Carbonara are at the Noble Bistro. Lionel Ferbos leads the trad band tonight at Palm Court. John Brunious leads tonight's band at Preservation Hall. The Panorama Jazz Band is at the Seaport Cafe. Ellis Marsalis is at Snug Harbor and Bruce Elsensohn is at the Steak Knife tonight.

The Krewe of Dixieland Jazz Band is at the French Market's Dutch Alley this afternoon. Today's music showcases at the Louisiana Music Factory feature Coolbone, Derek Douget and Walter Payton's Gumbo File Band.


The 12th annual Houston International Jazz Festival tonight features the Charged Particles, saxophonist Ronnie Laws, pianist David Benoit and hard bop vibraphonist Roy Ayers, plus Jazz Education Inc.'s Summer Jazz Workshop All-Stars.


Nnenna Freelon is at the Chautauqua Festival in Boulder, Colo., tonight.


On the California jazz scene... the Gerry Gibbs quartet featuring Ernie Watts, Arthur Blythe and Joe Bagg is at Steamers Jazz Cafe in Fullerton tonight. Cedar Walton's quartet is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight and Sunday. Brian Bromberg's trio is at the Jazz Bakery tonight.

The Bobby Hutcherson All-Star Quintet is at Yoshi's in Oakland this week. The Stanford Jazz Festival in Palo Alto features the Jimmy Heath quartet tonight. In San Francisco, Larry Vuckovich is at Bistro 339, trumpeter Mark Wright's sextet is at Jazz at Pearl's, Hilton Ruiz is at Rassella's on Fillmore tonight and Sunday, and Bryce Rohde is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club.


Omar Sosa's octet is at Jazz a Vannes in Vannes, France, tonight.

The 25th annual Jazz en Marciac festival in Marciac, France, tonight features the Kenny Barron Brazilian Project, Gilberto Gil, Nico Wayne and Milteau.


Jazz em Agosto (Jazz in August) is underway in Lisbon, Portugal, through Aug. 10. Participating musicians include Hamid Drake and Fred Anderson, Jeb Bishop, the Chicago Underground Quartet, Barry Guy, Marilyn Crispell, Mats Gustafsson, Keith Tippett, Evan Parker and the Lisbon Improvisation Players.
