Alto saxophonist Pete Yellin was born this day in 1941 in New York.

On this day in 1932, trumpeter Louis Armstrong played the London Palladium for the first time.

This also was the day, in 1939, when bandleader Erskine Hawkins first recorded "Tuxedo Junction" on the Bluebird label. It became his theme song and remained so until his death in 1993.

On this day in 1957, Charles Mingus recorded his album "Tijuana Moods" for RCA.

The Greater Hartford, Conn., Festival of Jazz holds a fundraising warmup concert tonight at the Belding Theater featuring trumpeter Chris Botti. The free festival at Bushnell Park is Friday through Sunday. It features Nestor Torres and Gato Barbieri on Friday, Special EFX featuring Chieli Minucci, Marion Meadows and Bobby Caldwell on Saturday, and Ali Ryerson and Joe Beck, Patricia Barber, Phil Woods and Joe Sample at Sunday's finale.
