Tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves was born this day in Brockton, Mass., in 1920. He grew up in Rhode Island, where his career highlight came at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival. Gonsalves blew an incredible 27-chorus solo on "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" that sparked a comeback for the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

On the New York jazz scene... the Hilton Ruiz band is at the Jazz Standard this week. The George Coleman quartet is at Iridium. Flora Purim and Airto Moreira are at the Blue Note through Sunday. Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band is at Birdland tonight. Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks perform tonight in Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing series. The Duane Eubanks Quintet is at The Jazz Gallery tonight. At the Knitting Factory tonight... the lineup includes Beer Drinkers Ball, Gang Green, No Redeeming Social Value, Eyes of Hate, The Flow, Nell Bryden and the Joel Newton Situation.

Wayne Shorter's New Quartet, the Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker-Roy Hargrove Directions in Music band, the Mingus Big Band, Joe Zawinul and the all-star quartet of John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Dave Holland and Al Foster are among the many attractions this weekend at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Netherlands. The three-night festival at the Congress Center presents more than 200 acts on 15 stages before the final notes are played on Sunday.
