Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trumpeter Conte Candoli was born this day in Mishawaka, Ind., in 1927.

Tenor saxophonist Paul Gonsalves was born this day in Brockton, Mass., in 1920. He grew up in Rhode Island, where his career highlight came at the 1956 Newport Jazz Festival. Gonsalves blew an incredible 27-chorus solo on "Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue" that sparked a comeback for the Duke Ellington Orchestra.

Looking at today's hip happenings...

On the New York jazz scene... the Hilton Ruiz band is at the Jazz Standard this week. The George Coleman quartet is at Iridium. Flora Purim and Airto Moreira are at the Blue Note through Sunday. Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band is at Birdland tonight. Vince Giordano and the Nighthawks perform tonight in Lincoln Center's Midsummer Night Swing series. The Duane Eubanks Quintet is at The Jazz Gallery tonight. At the Knitting Factory tonight... the lineup includes Beer Drinkers Ball, Gang Green, No Redeeming Social Value, Eyes of Hate, The Flow, Nell Bryden and the Joel Newton Situation.

Drummer Winard Harper's sextet is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight and Saturday.

Michelle Wilson brings her Evil Gal Orchestra into Chan's tonight in Woonsocket, R.I.

In greater Boston... the Chucho Valdes Quartet is at The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight. Walter Beasley is at Scullers tonight and Saturday. Trombonist Curtis Fuller is special guest tonight with the Emil Haddad-Dick Odgren Quartet in the Jazz at Sunset series at the EcoTarium in Worcester. Soul Kitchen is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight.

The Philadelphia Museum of Art presents pianist Cliff Korman's Brazilian Tinge Quintet tonight in its gallery jazz series.

Pete Fountain is at his club in the Hilton Hotel. Leroy Jones leads tonight's band at Preservation Hall. The Panorama Jazz Band is at the Seaport Cafe. Allen Toussaint is at Snug Harbor. On the California jazz scene... El Cajon Concerts on The Green presents the Kokopelli Latin Jazz Ensemble tonight. The Strummers with Sean and Sarah Watkins, Peter Sprague, Tripp Sprague, Kevin Hennessy, and Tommy Aros are at Dizzy's in San Diego. Saxophonist Sonny Fortune is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles through Sunday. Singer Karrin Allyson is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight. The Dekajaz tentet is at Steamer's Jazz Cafe in Fullerton tonight. John Calloway's Afro-Cuban Experience performs tonight at the Stanford Jazz Workshop and Festival in Palo Alto. The Yancy "Vibes" Taylor Jazz Trio is at Main Street Station in Guerneville. In San Francisco, Larry Vuckovich is at Bistro 339. George Khouri is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club and Mas Cabeza is at Bruno's.

Wayne Shorter's New Quartet, the Herbie Hancock, Michael Brecker-Roy Hargrove Directions in Music band, the Mingus Big Band, Joe Zawinul and the all-star quartet of John Scofield, Joe Lovano, Dave Holland and Al Foster are among the many attractions this weekend at the North Sea Jazz Festival in The Hague, Netherlands. The three-night festival at the Congress Center presents more than 200 acts on 15 stages before the final notes are played on Sunday.

The Heath Brothers quartet is featured tonight at Portugal's Estoril Jazz Festival.
