Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is July 11th.


Blues singer Blind Lemon Jefferson was born this day in 1897 in Wortham, Texas.


On this day in 1993, Afro-Cuban bandleader Mario Bauza died in New York City at age 82.


Composer George Gershwin died at age 38 in Beverly Hills, Calif., on this day in 1937.


On this day in 1958, in an unusual burst of creativity by even his standards, saxophonist John Coltrane recorded eight records for the Prestige label.


On this day in 2001, pianist Brad Mehldau's trio, Toots Thielemans, Kenny Werner, Dave Liebman and Philip Catherine were in the spotlight at France's Vienne Jazz Festival.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


On the New York jazz scene... the George Coleman quartet is at Iridium this week. The Hilton Ruiz band is at the Jazz Standard. Flora Purim and Airto Moreira are at the Blue Note through Sunday. Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band is at Birdland tonight through Saturday.

At the Knitting Factory tonight... the lineup includes Blake Hazard, 2 Skinny J's, The Hub, Dori Levine, False Relationships In A Big Country: Kevin Shea and Ravish Momin. The Adam Rogers Quartet is at the Jazz Gallery tonight. Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at the Nuyorican Poets Cafe tonight.


This is Cuban musicians week through serendipity at the Boston area's two major jazz venues. The Chucho Valdés Quartet is at The Regattabar in Cambridge tonight and Friday. The Cuban group Bamboleo is at Scullers in Boston tonight. Singer Toni Ballard's quartet is at Ryles in Cambridge tonight.


Trumpeter Maynard Ferguson and his band Big Bop Nouveau are at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight through Sunday.


In and around Chicago... Alan Gresik's Swing Shift Orchestra is at the Green Mill tonight. Saxophonist David Fathead Newman's quartet is at the Jazz Showcase. Erwin Helfer and the Chicago Boogie Ensemble are at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. There's a weekly jam session tonight at The Chambers in Niles, Ill., with John Bany, Don Stille and Charles Braugham. The Tito Carrillo Quartet is at Pops for Champagne. Temple Schultz is at Philander's in Oak Park.


In New Orleans tonight... Dr. Bone and the Hepcats are at the Banks Street Bar and Grill. New Orleans Streetbeat is at the Crescent City Brewhouse. Adonis Rose is at Dos Jefes. The David Dunbar Trio and Rob Wagner's New Thing are at El Matador tonight. Trumpeter Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. The Matt Fricke Quintet and Maurice Brown's Hot 7 are at the Funky Butt.

Louis Ford is at Satchmo's jazz room at Harrah's. Dave Bartholomew leads the band at Preservation Hall tonight. Trumpeter Christian Scott is at Snug Harbor. The Hot Club of New Orleans and the Panorama Jazz Band swing the traditional sounds tonight at The Spotted Cat. Kermit Ruffins and the Barbecue Swingers are at Vaughn's. LRQ is at d.b.a. tonight.


On the California jazz scene... trumpeter Josh Welchez is joined by saxophonist Jake Blackshear and friends tonight at Dizzy's in San Diego. Singer Karrin Allyson is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight. Saxophonist Sonny Fortune is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight through Sunday. The Edmund Velasco quintet is at Steamer's Jazz Cafe in Fullerton tonight. The Susie Hansen Latin Band is at Redondo Beach Pier tonight. In San Francisco, Bryce Rohde is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club and the Michael Manring Project is at Bruno's.


The Kenny Barron trio is in San Javier, Spain, tonight.


The El Indio sextet is featured tonight at Portugal's Estoril Jazz Festival.
