Singer Lena Horne was born this day in 1917 in Brooklyn, N.Y.

Bass player Stanley Clarke was born this day in 1951 in Philadelphia. He played the rock music scene in the late 1960s but soon was playing with Horace Silver, Joe Henderson, Pharoah Sanders and Stan Getz. His first step into prominence was in Chick Corea's Return to Forever band.

Pianist Andrew Hill was born this day in 1937 in Chicago.

Pianist Jasper Van't Hof was born this day in 1947 in Enschede, Netherlands.

On this day in 1939, Frank Sinatra made his debut with the Harry James band at the Hippodrome Theatre in Baltimore.

On this day in 1941, Harry James recorded "Record Session" in New York.

Looking at today's hip happenings...

Tonight's Montreal International Jazz Festival features include Lauryn Hill, John Scofield solo and with his uberjam project, Richard Galliano, the Susie Arioli Swing Band and Swiss singer Susanne Abbuehl. Cuban pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba concludes his portion of the festival's Invitation series by adding three horns and a percussionist to his usual trio.

On the New York scene... the Dizzy Gillespie Alumni All-Star Band performs at the Blue Note tonight. The Jason Moran trio is at the Village Vanguard tonight. Lea Delaria and her trio are at Iridium. Guitarist Peter Leitch and the bassist Harvie S. are at Walker's in the heart of Greenwich Village tonight. Saxophonist Ron Blake's Music 3 is at the Jazz Gallery featuring Pedro Martinez on percussion/vocals and Michele Ramo on guitar/violin.

Freihofer's Jazz Festival concludes today upstate in Saratoga Springs with the Wynton Marsalis septet, FourPlay, Natalie Cole, Cassandra Wilson, Roy Haynes, Angelique Kidjo, Steve Turre and the Moutin Reunion Quartet. Also performing are Living Daylights, Onaje Allen Gumbs' group, the Vijay Iyer quartet and Ray Vega's Latin jazz sextet.

Cuba's acclaimed Orquesta Aragon is at the Regattabar in Cambridge, Mass., tonight.

Trent Austin and the Jim Howe trio are at the Press Room in Portsmouth, N.H., tonight.

Saxophonist Rene McLean and IjazzAfrica are at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight.

In Cleveland... guitarist Folio Mays' band performs jazz and blues from the 1940s through 2000 this aftern0oon at the Alma Theater in Cain Park. Straight Six Dixie is at the North Olmsted Gazebo tonight. The Cleveland Jazz Orchestra performs tonight at Ursuline College.

On the Chicago jazz scene... the Ray Brown trio closes out its weeklong run at the Jazz Showcase. Mike Finnerty and the Jazz Hippies are at Cafe Ennui tonight. The Sonny Turner Quintet is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. The Russell Alan Rowe trio is at Pops for Champagne.

Tom Tallman's Student Jazz All-Stars, the he Green Mill Quartet featuring Barry Winograd and the Johnny Frigo Quartet perform today at the McAninch Arts Center at the College of DuPage in Glen Ellyn, Ill. Judy Roberts and Greg Fishman are at The Chambers in Niles. The Chicago Grandstand Big Band is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn. Singers Ann Hampton Callaway and Liz Callaway are at the Ravinia Festival tonight in Highland Park.

In New Orleans... Joe Krown is at Cobalt. New Orleans Streetbeat is at the Crescent City Brewhouse. Drummer Shannon Powell's quartet is at Donna's. The David Dunbar quartet is at El Matador. The JMO Jazz Band is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. James Westfall and Larry Sieberth are at Le Salon at Windsor Court. Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews is at the Maple Leaf. Harold 'Duke' Dejean's Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall. Delfeayo Marsalis is at Snug Harbor. Brian 'Breeze' Cayolle and Sharon Martin and First Take are at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor. Adonis Rose is at Sweet Lorraine.

In California... the Toshiko Akiyoshi and Lew Tabackin trio is at The Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight. Bassist Scott Colley's quartet with saxophonist Ravi Coltrane is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Author James Gavin will host a panel discussion this afternoon on Chet Baker's L.A. heydey at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Photographer William Claxton and others who knew Chet will participate. The Frank Strazzeri Trio and Jazz Bakery's own Ruth Price will perform some of Chet's best known songs.

The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra performs tonight at Stanford University's Campbell Recital Hall as part of the Stanford Jazz Festival. The Robin White trio is at Main Street Station in Guerneville. The Tom Harrell quintet is at Yoshi's in Oakland.

In San Francisco, Steve Ross is at the Plush Room this afternoon and Bobbe Norris and Larry Dunlap are there tonight, while Don Asher is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club. The CARMA Big Band holds an open rehearsal tonight at the JazzSchool in Berkeley.

Los Hombres Calientes are at Downtown Toronto Jazz today.

The Vancouver Jazz Festival schedule today and tonight includes singer Holly Cole and the CBC Radio Orchestra, Oscar Lopez, De-Phazz, the Claudia Acuna quintet, Renee Rosnes, Mike Zilber, and Tony Malaby. The festival concludes tomorrow with a series of 19 performances on Granville Island.

The Pat Metheny Group is in Malaga, Spain, tonight.
