Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Pianist and songwriter Cy Coleman was born this day in 1929. His best-known tunes include the bewitching standard "Witchcraft."

Dixieland guitarist Nappy Lamare was born this day in New Orleans in 1907. He was a key member of the rhythm section in Bob Crosby's band from 1935 to 1942. In the 1950s, he co-led the Riverboat Dandies with Ray Bauduc.


Bass player Marcus Miller was born this day in 1959. He grew up in New York City, and his career grew in collaboration with trumpeter Miles Davis. Miller performed on and co-produced several of Davis's last contemporary jazz recordings, including "Amandla" and "Tutu."


On this day in 1946, Nat "King" Cole's Trio recorded "The Christmas Song." A version recorded with strings two months later became his commercial hit with the song, written by Mel Torme and Bob Wells.

Pianist David Hazeltine's classic trio with special guest Eric Alexander holds a CD release event tonight and Saturday at Smoke. Trio 3 with Andrew Cyrille, Oliver Lake and Reggie Workman, bass is at the Up Over Jazz Café in Brooklyn tonight and Saturday. The Michael Mussollami-Mario Pavone quartet is at the Knitting Factory.


In and around Boston, the Mike Stern quartet is at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight and Saturday. Trumpeter Marvin Stamm is guest soloist with Ryles Jazz Orchestra at Ryles in Cambridge tonight. Scott Hamilton is featured tonight in the Jazz at Sunset series at the Ecotarium in Worcester.

Sunny Sumter is at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight.


Singer Susan Hesse's quartet is at the Cleveland Museum of Art tonight. Roberto Ocasio's Latin jazz project is at the Tower City Amphitheater. Singer Pio Leyva and Los Tres de la Habana are at Nighttown in Cleveland tonight.


The Indy Jazz Festival opens its weekend run tonight in downtown Indianapolis. Five stages of jazz, blues, gospel and soul, will feature performers including Arturo Sandoval, Bruce Hornsby, Spyro Gyra, Aretha Franklin, Bela Fleck and the Flecktones, B.B. King and Dianne Reeves.

On the Chicago jazz scene... a series of small ensemble and large groups performances by the Brotzmann Chicago Tentet is scheduled tonight through Sunday at the Storefront Theater and the Chicago Cultural Center's Claudia Cassidy Theater. Tonight, two groups perform. They feature Mats Gustafsson, Jeb Bishop, Hamid Drake and Kent Kessler and Peter Brotzmann, Fred Lonberg-Holm and Michael Zerang.

The Sonny Rollins quintet is at Ravinia tonight in Highland Park. The Dace Holland sextet is at the Jazz Showcase. Ben Rudolph precedes the late night jam session at the Green Mill. Skinny Williams is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. The King Fleming trio is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Typhanie Monique quartet is at Pops for Champagne.

The Toronto edition of the JVC Jazz Festival opens tonight with a free concert by the Cedar Walton trio with special guest Jackie McLean at the Harbourfront Centre Concert Stage with Toronto-based bassist Henry Heillig's quartet, Heillig Manoeuvre, opening the show. Other concerts over the nest week feature Medeski. Martin and Wood with Bullfrog, Kenny Garrett, Eric Truffaz, Cuban singer Mayra Caridad Valdés, François Bourassa, Mother of Pearl, the François Carrier trio with special guest Jason Moran, Andy Milne and Dapp Theory and singer Molly Johnson.
