Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Jazz trumpeter Doc Cheatham was born this day in Nashville, Tenn., in 1905. He toiled in near anonymity for years as a big band section player, but came into his own as a jazz soloist in the 1970s. Cheatham died in 1997 at age 91. He was stricken hours after completing an engagement at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., with trumpeter Nicholas Payton.

Versatile woodwind player Phil Bodner was born this day in 1919 in Waterbury, Conn. He recorded with Benny Goodman, the Miles Davis-Gil Evans Orchestra, Oliver Nelson, J.J. Johnson, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson and many other musicians.


Guitarist Attila Zoller was born this day in 1927 in Visegrad, Hungary. He moved to the United States in 1959 and toured with Herbie Mann and Red Norvo before forming his own quartet. While maintaining a touring schedule, Zoller for 25 years also ran a jazz center in southern Vermont to work with jazz professionals and students. Zoller died in 1998.

On the New York jazz scene... guitarist Jim Hall's trio with bassist Scott Colley and drummer Terry Clarke is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. Roberta Flack is at the Blue Note this week. The Lee Konitz trio is at Iridium this week. Frank Foster and his Loud Minority Big Band are at The Jazz Standard through Sunday.

Pianist Marcus Roberts' trio with bassist Roland Guerin and drummer Jason Marsalis is at Iridium this week. Singer Steve Lippia and The Nelson Riddle Orchestra directed by Mike Berkowitz celebrate the music of Frank Sinatra tonight through Saturday at Birdland. John Pizzarelli is at Feinstein's at the Regency. Steve Johns and Peter Brainin are at Smalls tonight.

The Lost Shrines series at the Tribeca Arts Center tonight continues its remembrance of the belated club Sluggs and some of the memorable groups that played there. Those taking part tonight include Stanley Cowell, Charles Tolliver, Cecil McBee and Clifford Barbaro. The Arkadia Music Center tonight presents T.K. Blue and Makinto in a jazz meets Africa performance.


The International Festival of Arts and Ideas opens tonight in and around New Haven, Connecticut. Performances over the next two weeks include the Abdullah Ibrahim Trio, the Gonzalo Rubalcaba Trio, La Bottine Souriante, Recoveco and others. (See artidea.org for details.)

The Pittsburgh edition of the Mellon Jazz Festival opens its annual run tonight. Tony Bennett, Dr. John and Kenny Garrett headline the festival. The Philadelphia edition opens June 20 and runs through the 23rd. In the past, they ran simultaneously. (See festivalproductions.net.)

Erwin Helfer and the Chicago Boogie Ensemble are at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Temple Schultz is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Tito Carrillo quartet is at Pops for Champagne.


On the New Orleans jazz scene... Dr. Bone and the Hepcats are at the Banks Street Bar and Grill. Bob Sunda and Joe Krown are at Charley G's. Kingsnake Boogie and the Manabu Sakei jazz trio are at Checkpoint Charlie. Matt Lemmler is at Cobalt. Wendell Brunious's Jazz Summit with Henry Butler is at Dos Jefes. David Dunbar is at El Matador. Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz Carlton's French Quarter Bar. The Joe Krown Organ Combo is at the Funky Butt. Louis Ford is at Satchmo's jazz room in Harrah's casino.
