Trombonist Al Grey, the great Basie band veteran and the man who literally wrote the book on use of the plunger mute in jazz tromboning, was born this day in 1925 in Aldie, Va. He died earlier this year of complications from diabetes.


Pianist Monty Alexander was born this day in 1944 in Kingston, Jamaica.

On the New York jazz scene... the Pharoah Sanders quartet is at Iridium all week. Singer-pianist Diane Schuur is at the Blue Note. The Jacky Terrasson trio with bassist Sean Smith and drummer Al Foster is at the Village Vanguard this week. The Chicago Jazz Ensemble conducted by William Russo is at Birdland tonight.
