Today is June 1st.

Composer and bandleader Nelson Riddle was born this day in Oradell, N.J., in 1921. He had a knack for arranging songs and led backup orchestras for some of America's finest singers, including Peggy Lee, Judy Garland, Nat King Cole, Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Frank Sinatra and Linda Ronstadt. Sinatra's success in the late 1950s was due in large measure to Riddle's fine arrangements of several standards albums. Nelson Riddle died in October 1985.
