'THE OSBOURNES' -- THE ALBUM

Like the Brady Bunch and the Partridge Family before then, the Osbournes are going to parlay success on a hit TV show into an album of music.

"The Osbournes Family Album" -- due in stores on June 11 -- features cuts by veteran rocker Ozzy Osbourne, daughter Kelly, a metal band featuring son Jack and former next-door neighbor Pat Boone covering Osbourne's "Crazy Train."

Osbourne is touring in Europe, so he participated via satellite in a Los Angeles news conference to talk about the project. Speaking of daughter Kelly's cover of Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach," Osbourne said: "I'm passing the torch to my daughter."

Kelly told reporters she loves Madonna.

"Who doesn't?" she asked.

"I don't," said her dad.

PLANT WILL GUEST WITH PRIMAL SCREAM

Former Led Zeppelin frontman Robert Plant will make a guest appearance on the new album by British modern rockers Primal Scream.

According to the New Musical Express, Plant plays harmonica on "The Lord Is My Shotgun" -- which Primal Scream singer Bobby Gillespie classifies as psychedelic blues. Gillespie told the paper that he and Plant bumped into each other quite naturally on the street, as Plant lives near the band's studio.

Primal Scream's new album -- which does not have a title yet -- is due in stores this summer.

IF YOU WANT TO BE A GOOD WRITER ...

Warren Zevon has found a way around songwriter's block -- by enlisting help from his friends.

Zevon told the Los Angeles Times that he's been collaborating lately with crime novelist Carl Hiaasen, Irish poet Paul Muldoon, bassist-producer Larry Klein and gonzo journalist Hunter S. Thompson -- all of whom contributed songs to his new album "My Ride's Here."

"A lot of the time it's an awful, unnatural struggle for me to write lyrics," said Zevon. "I think of it as a necessary evil. If it gets business-like, I'm unhappy with the results. I have to wait for some kind of inspiration, and that means a lot of extreme frustration, because I'm not being useful."

Zevon said he got good results working with Hiaasen ("Strip Tease," "Sick Puppy"), who also co-wrote songs for Zevon's 1995 album "Mutineer." He said he first got turned on to Hiassen's prose on a top from R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck -- and wound up becoming pals with Hiassen.

"By the time I got to 'Native Tongue,' I was such a fan I bribed the guy at the bookstore to sell me an advance copy," said Zevon. "Then I looked in it and I saw my name on the copyright page."

It turns out Hiassen was a Zevon fan, and now the guys go fishing in the Florida Keys and write songs together. One of their collaborations, "Basket Case," not only appears on "My Ride's Here" -- it also bears the same title as Hiaasen's newest book and a fictional record that features in the story.

"The song is supposed to be the song of the rock band in the book," said Zevon. "The lyrics are actually printed in the novel."
