Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Traditional jazz cornetist and valve trombonist Pete Daily was born this day in Portland, Ind., in 1911. He died in 1986.

Pianist Stanley Cowell was born this day in 1941 in Toledo, Ohio. He has worked with Rahsaan Roland Kirk, Bobby Hutcherson, the Heath Brothers and the Newport Jazz Festival All-Stars.


On this day in 1959, Charles Mingus recorded "Fables of Faubus" for his classic album "Mingus Ah Um." The work had a complex 71-bar theme - and a mocking, satirical message about Arkansas Gov. Orval Faubus and segregation in America.

The 33rd annual edition of the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival, better known locally and among its hundreds of thousands of attendees as "JazzFest," winds down today. Today's wide-ranging headliners include the Neville Brothers -- the traditional mainstage closing act, Phil Lesh and Friends, Papa Wemba, Abbey Lincoln, trumpeter Nicholas Payton's quintet, David Sanchez, Pete Fountain, Gregg Stafford's Jazz Hounds, and favorite local Samba star Fredy Omar.

Kidd Jordan, the Al Belletto big band and the Yellow Jackets are also on the extensive 12-stage schedule.

Elsewhere in the Crescent City, "Jazz and More on the Northshore" presents the James Rivers Movement and lectures by jazz historian Dr. Karl Koening tonight at the Dew Drop Inn and Dance Hall. Shannon Powell is at Donna's tonight with singers Topsy Chapman and Davell Crawford. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at Le Bon Temps Roule.

The Jazz and Blues Chanteuse Series: continues tonight with Leah Chase and Chase Kamata at Le Chat Noir. Corey Harris and Henry Butler are at Mama's Blues. John Mooney and Bluesiana, the ReBirth Brass Band and Troy 'Trombone Shorty' Andrews' Brass Band are at the Maple Leaf.

The Dirty Dozen Brass Band with DJ Logic and special guests are at the Mermaid Lounge. Luther Dickenson, Charlie Hunter and Johnny Vidacovich are at the Old Point tonight. The funky Meters are at the Orpheum Theater tonight. Lucien Barbarin leads the Sunday Night Swingsters at the Palm Court. Harold 'Duke' Dejean's Olympia Brass Band is at Preservation Hall.

The Shim Sham Revue featuring Ingrid Lucia, Ronnie Magri and the Southern Jezebelles is at the Shim Sham Club. Trumpeter Nicholas Payton is at Snug Harbor. The Coolbone Brass Band, Kiki Bonilla and Roderick Paulin are at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor. Davell Crawford is at Sweet Lorraine.

On the New York jazz scene, the Lou Donaldson quartet is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. The Danilo Perez trio is at the Jazz Standard all week. The Michel Camilo and Kenny Werner trios are at the Blue Note through Sunday. Kenny Garrett is at Iridium this week. The Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band is at Birdland tonight. "Astilla" featuring Me'shell NdegeOcello, Federico Pena, Gregoire Maret and Gene Lake is at The Jazz Gallery tonight.

Trombonist Chris Washburne's Latin jazz band SYOTOS is at Smoke tonight.


The Bud Shank quintet is at the Jazz Showcase in Chicago tonight. Elsewhere in and near the Windy City, the John Burnett Orchestra is at Fitzgerald's in Berwyn. The Russell Alan Rowe Trio is at Pops for Champagne tonight.


On the California jazz scene, Kenny Barron, Stefon Harris, Javon Jackson, Rufus Reid and Lewis Nash are featured in a tribute to the late Joe Henderson at Yoshi's in Oakland. Benny Green is at the Catalina in North Hollywood tonight. Jason Moran's trio is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight.

The Golden Eagle Dixieland jazz band is at Steamer's Jazz Café en Fullerton this afternoon. Susie Hansen's Latin jazz band performs at the Pasadena Cinco de Mayo Celebration in Centennial Square this afternoon and tonight at the Spaghettini Italian Grill in Seal Beach. The Alcatraz Angels Jazz Band is at Dick's Restaurant in San Leandro this afternoon. The Wayne Wallace quintet is at the Jazzschool in Berkeley this afternoon. The CARMA Big Band holds an open rehearsal at The Jazzschool tonight.

The Big Sur Jazz Festival concludes today and tonight with the Scott Amendola band, Eric Person and Meta-Four, the Kitty Margolis quintet, the Brad Mehldau trio, the Omar Sosa septet and Bruce Forman's jazz legends band.

In San Francisco, Bill Henderson, Eric Comstock and Dena deRose bring their Hollywood Songbook show to The Plush Room this afternoon. Don Asher is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club tonight.
