Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Composer and pianist Johnny Guarnieri was born in New York this day in 1917. Guarnieri was the first player to use the harpsichord in jazz. He did that on "Summit Ridge Drive," one of Artie Shaw's Gramercy Five recordings.

Singer, songwriter, pianist and musical humorist Dave Frishberg was born this day in 1933 in St. Paul, Minnesota. He wrote "Peel Me A Grape," a classic torch song made famous by Blossom Dearie many years ago, and a hit that has been brought to fresh ears in the last couple of years by singer Diana Krall.


Vibes and marimba player Dave Pike was born this day in 1938 in Detroit.

On the New York jazz scene, Fred Hersch, Howard Alden, Melba Joyce and Barbara Carroll are among the jazz performers taking part in today's Wall to Wall Richard Rogers musical marathon at Symphony Space. Saxophonist Ted Nash's quintet is at the newly reopened Jazz Standard tonight as part of the Jazz Composers Collective's weeklong jazz festival.

Singer Carol Sloane is at the Village Vanguard with pianist Norman Simmons, bassist Paul West, drummer Winard Harper and guitarist Paul Bollenback for two more nights. Pianist McCoy Tyner's trio is joined by special guest Bobby Hutcherson at Iridium. Singer Kurt Elling's quartet is at Birdland tonight. Tenor saxophonist Gato Barbieri's band is at the Blue Note through Sunday.

Vijay Iyer and Andy Milne are featured tonight in The Jazz Gallery's month-long dual piano series. Junior Mance is the featured pianist this week at the Knickerbocker. Douglas and Trisha Brown are at Location One. Organist John Medeski joins forces with Hal Crook's band Um tonight at Tonic. Singer Lavay Smith and her Red Hot Skillet Lickers are at Makor.

Pianist Bertha Hope plays the music of her late husband, Elmo Hope, tonight at the Brooklyn Conservatory of Music. Whitney Marchelle's quartet is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight. John Hart and Paul Bollenback are the lead instructors today in the Arkadia Music center's new Guitar Days master class and performance series.

Singer Roz Corral's quartet is at Cobi's Place in midtown Manhattan tonight. There's also an afternoon lecture and video presentation by Delilah Jackson that salutes jazz women with rare film clips of Hazel Scott, Elizabeth Welch, Sarah Vaughan and Ina Ray Hutton.

The Dave Brubeck quartet performs tonight at the Performing Arts Center at the State University of New York at Purchase.
