Today is March 17.
Pianist and singer Nat "King" Cole was born this day in 1917 in Montgomery, Ala. Cole was a jazz innovator who developed the piano, guitar and bass trio format that became the standard starting in the 1940s. The general public largely ignored his skillful piano playing after the world fell in love with his smoky voice.
Saxophonist Paul Horn was born this day in New York in 1930. After a decade of straight-ahead jazz work, including stints with Lalo Schifrin and Tony Bennett, Horn went to India to study transcendental meditation. In 1967, he began teaching T-M. In 1968, he recorded a solo flute recording in the Taj Mahal, then another in the Great Pyramid in Egypt. Horn's work gave birth to the New Age music genre that exploded in the 1980s.
