Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Tenor saxophonist Herschel Evans was born this day in 1909 in Denton, Texas. During three years with the Basie Band, from 1936 to 1939, he was paired with Lester Young in what started the band's battling tenor solos.

Looking at today's hip happenings...


On the New York jazz scene, singer-songwriter Abbey Lincoln's three-night career celebration continues concludes this evening at Lincoln Center. Willie Colon's band is at the Blue Note for two more nights. Drummer Lewis Nash's trio is at Birdland. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove's quintet is at the Village Vanguard. Pianist Cyrus Chestnut's All-Stars are at Iridium. The Benny Golson quartet is at Smoke tonight. Pianist Eric Reed's trio is at the Up Over Jazz Café tonight. Singer Blossom Dearie is at Danny's Skylight Room.

Jason Lindner and Luis Perdomo are featured tonight in the Jazz Gallery's month-long duo piano series. Perhaps they'll flip a coin to see who plays the Baldwin from Bradley's or Carmen McRae's Yamaha, or alternate between the two grand pianos.

Tonight's Knitting Factory lineup includes a record release party for Brilliant Corners, a Thelonious Monk cover band. The band includes trumpeter John McDonough, alto saxophonist Jody Espina, pianist Andy Pritikin, guitarist Ed Littman, bassist Tom Shad and drummer Rob Garcia. The CD is out on Yeah Man Records.

Singer Michael Camacho and his band are at Shelly's in New York tonight. The unit features guitarist John Hart, drummer Tim Horner and trumpeter Richie Vitale.

Trumpeter Freddie Hubbard's band is scheduled tonight at The Van Dyck in Schenectady.


Tenor saxophonist Joel Frahm's quartet performs tonight at Asylum Hill Congregational Church in Hartford, Conn., under sponsorship of The Hartford Jazz Society.


The Yellow Jackets are at the B.B. King Night Club at Foxwoods Casino in Ledyard, Conn., tonight.


Alto saxophonist Greg Abate's quartet is at CAV in Providence, R.I., tonight.


In and around Boston, tenor saxophone colossus Sonny Rollins is at Mechanics Hall in Worcester tonight as part of the Mass Jazz Festival concert series. The Dave Brubeck quartet is at the Berklee Performance Center in Boston tonight and Sunday. Keely Smith is at Scullers jazz club in Boston. Sol y Canto is at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight.

On the Chicago jazz scene, tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman is at the Jazz Showcase for two more nights. The group Stormy Weather performs tonight at the Newberry Library. The Omar Sosa-John Santos Trio is at the Old Town School of Folk Music tonight. The Sabertooth Organ Trio leads the late night jam at the Green Mill, where the music sometimes stretches until dawn.

Bopology is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Rankinfyle is at Philander's in Oak Park. Guitarist Henry Johnson's quartet is at Pops for Champagne tonight. The Ken Cheney trio and Shirley King quintet are at Pops of Highwood.


In New Orleans, Sam Rivers and his Rivbea Orchestra are at the Contemporary Arts Center tonight. New Orleans Streetbeat is at the Crescent City Brewhouse. Trumpeter Leroy Jones' quintet is at Donna's.

Jeremy Davenport is in the spotlight at the Ritz-Carlton's French Quarter Bar. Devin Phillips is at the Funky Butt.

Have Soul Will Travel is at LeBon Temps Roule. Lionel Ferbos leads the band at the Palm Court. Pete Fountain plays at his club in the New Orleans Hilton. Wendell Brunious leads the band at Preservation Hall. Pianist Ellis Marsalis is at Snug Harbor. Rebecca Barry is at the New Orleans Jazz National Heritage Park this afternoon.
