Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

The pianist and composer Tadd Dameron was born this day in 1917 in Cleveland, Ohio. Underacknowledged during his career, he is considered today to have been one of the first great jazz arrangers. He had a profound influence on composers Horace Silver, Benny Golson and others. Tadd Dameron died in 1965.

Cornet player Warren Vache Jr. was born this day in 1951 in Rahway, N.J. He's one of the premiere swing cornet players today, has toured with the Newport Jazz Festival All-Stars, and has been a favorite sideman of singer Rosemary Clooney.

On the New York jazz scene, pianist Jacky Terrasson's trio is at Iridium. Pianist Bruce Barth's trio with Al Foster and Ugonna Okegwo is at the Village Vanguard. Dr. John is at the Blue Note. Pianist Hank Jones's trio is at Birdland through Saturday. The Misako Kano quartet featuring Mark Helias is at the Jazz Gallery tonight. Trombonist Chris Washburne's SYOTOS Latin jazz band is at the Nuyorican Poets Café tonight.

The Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra investigates and celebrates the music of Charles Mingus tonight and again on Saturday at Alice Tully Hall. The orchestra will be joined by alto saxophonist Charles McPherson in performances of a cross-section of Mingus works.

The Carnegie Hall Jazz Band presents a 10th anniversary celebration concert tonight featuring the music of John Coltrane, Frank Foster, Cole Porter, George Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Duke Ellington, Louis Prima, Jerome Kern, Slide Hampton, Leonard Bernstein, Thelonious Monk and Henry Mancini. The band, led by trumpeter Jon Faddis, is in its final season at Carnegie Hall.


In and around Boston, tenor saxophonist Branford Marsalis's quartet is at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight through Sunday. Trumpeter Hugh Masekela's band is at Scullers jazz club in Boston tonight and Friday. Singer Kris Adams and violinist Paula Zeitlin perform "car songs" today at Wellesley College's Davis Museum.

The Berklee College of Music pays tribute tonight to tenor saxophonist Andy McGhee, who recently retired after 32 years on the faculty. Those honoring McGhee tonight through music include the Kendrick Oliver Big Band and two of McGhee's former students, Javon Jackson and Bill Pierce, who now heads the Berklee reed department. The Lionel Hampton and Woody Herman band veteran's other proteges included Ralph Moore, Antonio Hart, Richie Cole, Donald Harrison and Greg Osby.

The Lars Halley Big Band is at Chris's Jazz Café in Philadelphia tonight.


Violinist Regina Carter's quintet and vibes player Stefon Harris perform tonight through Sunday at the Manchester Craftsmen's Guild in Pittsburgh.


On the Chicago jazz scene, tenor saxophonist Scott Hamilton's quartet is at the Jazz Showcase tonight through Sunday. The Mike Smith-Ron Freidman quintet is at Andy's tonight.

There's a CD release performance tonight at HotHouse for Grazyna Auguscik. Erwin Helfer and the Chicago Boogie Ensemble are at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. John Wright is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Tito Carrillo quartet is at Pops for Champagne.


In New Orleans tonight, Harry Connick Sr. is at Cobalt. Todd Duke is at Donna's. Sheik Rasheed and Unit One are at the Dragon's Den. Ingrid Lucia and the Flying Neutrinos are at El Matador. The Joe Krown Organ Combo is at the Funky Butt. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at Le Bon Temps Roule. Bonerama is at the Maple Leaf.

John Brunious leads the band at Preservation Hall. Drummer Ricky Sebastian's quintet is at Snug Harbor. The Panorama Jazz Band is at the Spotted Cat. Clarinetist Tim Laughlin warms things up for singer Marva Wright at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor. Kermit Ruffins and his Barbecue Swingers are at Vaughn's.

Clark Terry, Ray Brown, Hank Jones, Bucky Pizzarelli, John Clayton, Lewis Nash, Roy Hargrove Quintet, David "Fathead" Newman, Robin Eubanks, Dee Daniels, Jane Jarvis and Roberta Gambarini are among the special guests in concert tonight at the Lionel Hampton Jazz Festival at the University of Idaho's Moscow campus. The evening also features a tribute to the late Gerry Mulligan with baritone saxophonists Ronnie Cuber, Howard Johnson and Claire Daly. The festival continues through Saturday.


On the California jazz scene, Mose Allison is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Singer Karrin Allyson is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. Guitarist Ron Eschete and singer Dewey Erney team up tonight at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton.

The Mike Stern band is at Yoshi's in Oakland. The Know Jazz Band is at Mingles Martini and Champagne Lounge in Oakland. Don Bennett and Jim Putnam are at Saylor's in Sausalito. Rick Vandivier is at the Hedley Club in San Jose. Wanda Stafford and the Si Perkoff Band are at the Panama Hotel and Restaurant in San Rafael. Macy Blackman is at the Downtown restaurant in Berkeley.

In San Francisco tonight, Michael Bluestein is at Enrico's. Bryce Rohde is at the Bix Restaurant and Supper Club. Swing Session is at the Top of the Mark. Noel Jewkes is featured with the Vince Lateano trio at Jazz at Pearl's. Jim Campilongo and Strings are at Bruno's. Ledisi is at Café du Nord. The Jazz Knights are at the Pier 23 Café.
