Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Cuban bandleader Machito was born in Havana this day in 1912. He came to the United States in 1937. Trumpeter Dizzy Gillespie was heavily influenced by his collaborations with Machito and his band, the Afro-Cubans.

Tenor saxophonist Pete Christlieb was born this day in 1945 in Los Angeles.


Baritone saxophonist Charlie Fowlkes was born this day in 1916 in Brooklyn, N.Y. He worked in the Count Basie Orchestra for 18 years in the 1950s and '60s.


Piano and organ player Bill Doggett was born this day in 1916 in Philadelphia. He toured with Lucky Millinder and Jimmy Mundy and the Illinois Jacquet big band.

On the New York jazz scene, Cassandra Wilson is at the Blue Note for two more nights. Dee Dee Bridgewater is at Iridium. Trumpeter Clark Terry's quintet is scheduled at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. Jimmy Scott is at Birdland tonight. There's a CD release event for alto saxophonist Miguel Zenon's debut recording "Looking Forward" tonight at The Jazz Gallery.

Blake Tartare is at The Knitting Factory tonight with special guest David Tronzo. The Knitting factory lineup also includes Bernie Worrell and the Woo Warriors and the Jazz Mandolin Project. Joel Forrester's People Like Us band performs for the brunch crowd this afternoon at The Garage. Pianist Danny Mixon's trio is at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight. The Poncho Sanchez Latin Jazz Band is at B.B. King's tonight and Sunday.

Wynton Marsalis and the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra host two Jazz for Young People concerts today that consider the subject "Who is John Coltrane?" The family oriented program at Alice Tully Hall. Tonight, saxophonist Pharoah Sanders joins the Lincoln Center Jazz Orchestra for a concert celebrating the music of John Coltrane.


Alto saxophonist Bruce Williams' quartet is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight.


Vibes player Stefon Harris and violinist Regina Carter bring their bands to Rhode Island College's Roberts Auditorium in Providence tonight.


In and around Boston, Abbey Lincoln is at Scullers in Boston tonight. The Michael Brecker quartet is at the Regattabar in Cambridge tonight and Sunday. The Jazz Composers Alliance Orchestra performs this afternoon at the Hyde Park Community Center. The 23rd annual Thomas A. Dorsey Gospel Jubilee takes place tonight and again Sunday afternoon at Jordan Hall in Boston.

On the Philadelphia jazz scene, Mary Ellen Desmond and Lou Lanza sing the American songbook, or at least parts of it, tonight at Chris's Jazz Café with special guests Bootsie Barnes and Mark Kramer. Doc Gibbs and Picante, featuring Jon Lucien, are at Zanzibar Blue.


Singer Rene Marie and her trio are at the Erie, Pa., Art Museum Annex tonight.


On the Chicago jazz scene, drummer Matt Wilson's Arts and Crafts band is at the Green Mill tonight. Ron Friedman quintet with Jackie Allen is at Andy's. Mambo Express is at HotHouse. Bopology is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Rankinfyle is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Dee Alexander quartet is at Pops for Champagne.


In New Orleans, trumpeter Leroy Jones quintet is at Donna's. Trumpeter Jeremy Davenport is at the Ritz-Carlton's French Quarter Bar. Devin Phillips and Delfeayo Marsalis headline the Funky Butt tonight. Lionel Ferbos leads the band tonight at Palm Court. Trumpeter Wendell Brunious calls the tunes at Preservation Hall. Billy Chapman is in the spotlight at the Red Bike. Ed Peterson and Henry Butler team up tonight at Snug Harbor.

Bob French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band are at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor, along with Sharon Martin. Trombonist Craig Klein and the New Orleans Night Crawlers Brass Band are at the French Market Complex this afternoon. Carl LeBlanc performs "Songs of My People" today at the New Orleans Jazz National Historical Park.

On the California jazz scene, trumpeter Roy Hargrove's quintet is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. Saxophonist Chris Potter's quartet at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. The Bobby Redfield Latin jazz band is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton. Guitarist Chuck Loeb's band is at Sun Valley Shopping Center in Concord.

The 2nd annual Newport Beach Jazz Party is in full swing at the Newport Beach Marriott Hotel and Tennis Club. Tonight's headliners are drummer Lewis Nash's trio and saxophonist Houston Person's quartet.

Singer Nancy Wilson is at Yoshi's in Oakland. The Marcus Roberts trio is at the University of California Santa Cruz tonight. Bud Spangler is at Spiedo Ristorante in San Jose with Larry Vuckovich and Paul Breslin. The Wally Schnalle quartet is at the Hedley Club in San Jose. Saxophonist Mel Martin is at the Downtown restaurant in Berkeley. Duckstan Distones jazz quartet is at Anna's Bistro in Berkeley tonight.
