Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Today is Feb. 13.

Trumpet player Wingy Manone was born this date in New Orleans in 1904. His finest recordings were made in the 1930s. His got his nickname "Wingy" after losing his right arm in a streetcar accident. Manone was a frequent victim of legendary jazz practical joker Joe Venuti. One year on Manone's birthday, Venuti sent him a big gift-wrapped box containing one cuff link.

Tenor saxophonist Wardell Gray was born this day in 1921 in Oklahoma City. He joined the Earl Hines band in 1943 and came to prominence in jam sessions and recordings with Dexter Gordon. Gray was an important contributor to Benny Goodman's first experiments with bebop. He was found dead in the Las Vegas desert in May 1955, presumably murdered after performing at a hotel opening with Benny Carter's big band.

On this day in 1929, pianist Earl "Fatha" Hines made his first recording with his nine-piece band. The song was called "Sweet Ella May."

The 11th annual East Coast Jazz Festival opens its five-night run tonight at the DoubleTree Hotel in Rockville, Md. This year's talent roster includes Robin Eubanks, Richie Cole, Papa John DeFrancesco, Buck Hill, Sonny Fortune, Mose Allison, Stefon Harris, Roseanna Vitro, Eric Reed, Steve Wilson, Buster Williams, Irene Reid, Ernie Andrews, James Moody, Keter Betts, Bruce Barth and Ray Drummond.

On the Chicago jazz scene, Steve Hashimoto and Pat Fleming are at Andy's for the Jazz at Noon series, while guitarist Henry Johnson's quartet is in the evening spotlight. The Bill Porter Orchestra with Rich Fudoli is at Green Dolphin Street. Kurt Elling is at the Green Mill. The Brass Tracks Big Band is at Hackney's tonight. Ken Saydak is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Kelly Brand. Kelly Sill and Hinda Hoffman are at Michael's Jazz Bistro in Glen Ellyn. Jackie Allen and Judy Roberts are at Philander's in Oak Park tonight.

In New Orleans tonight, the Soul Rebels Brass Band is at El Matador. Have Soul Will Travel is at the Funky Butt: Johnny Vidacovich, George Porter Jr. and Anders Osborne team up at the Old Point. Wendell Brunious leads the band at Preservation Hall. Fredy Omar's salsa band is at the Red Room. Saxophonist Loren Pickford brings his band Gamuk into Snug Harbor tonight.

On the California jazz scene, saxophonist Chris Potter's quartet at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles all week. Trumpeter Roy Hargrove's quintet is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. Singer Nancy Wilson is at Yoshi's in Oakland. The Javier Vergara quartet is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. Gary Rowe is at the Downtown restaurant in Berkeley.

In San Francisco tonight, Ricardo Scales precedes Pure Ecstacy at the Top of the Mark, Ned Boynton's band is at Enrico's and Gregory James is at Butterfly. Paula West is at the Plush Room. Don Asher and Kent Cohea are at Moose's. The Vince Lateano trio is at Jazz at Pearl's. Jim Campilongo, Scott Amendola and John Shifflett are at Bruno's.

On the recording front...

Hammond B-3 organ marvel Tony Monaco's new recording "Master Chops T" is out today on the Summit label. His regular trio is joined by trombonist Sarah Morrow, saxophonist Donny McCaslin and trumpeter Kenny Rampton.
