Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Bass player Wellman Braud was born this day in New Orleans in 1891. He also played guitar and doubled as a brass band drummer. He was a mainstay in the Duke Ellington Orchestra from 1927 to 1935. Wellman Braud claimed he developed the walking bass line technique. He died in Los Angeles in 1966.

Pianist Barbara Carroll was born this day in 1925 in Worcester, Mass. She led a bebop trio in New York in the late 1940s and '50s, then took 20 years out to remarry and raise a family. She resumed her career in 1976.


Brazilian pianist and composer Antonio Carlos Jobim, the father the Bossa Nova, was born this day in 1927 in Rio de Janeiro. The man who wrote countless songs that became favorites of jazz musicians died in December 1994 in New York.

Bandleader and tenor saxophonist Benny Golson was born this day in 1929 in Philadelphia. The jazz standards he has written include "Whisper Not" and "I Remember Clifford," a musical elegy to trumpeter Clifford Brown.


Pianist D.D. Jackson was born in Ottawa, Canada, on this day in 1967. He's a disciple of the late pianist Don Pullen and has released several fine recordings on the Justin Time label and for RCA Victor.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


Jazz at Lincoln Center premieres commissioned compositions by pianists Randy Weston and Danilo Perez tonight as part of its "As of Now" series at Alice Tully Hall in New York. Weston wrote his work "Ancient Future" for violinist Regina Carter and his African Rhythms Orchestra. Perez wrote "Freedom of Colors" for his Motherland Project that is focusing on a pan-American jazz synthesis. The Alice Tully hall concert will repeat on Saturday.

Elsewhere on the New York jazz scene, Don Byron's Music for Six Musicians project is at theVillage Vanguard this week. Jon Hendricks and Annie Ross share the billing with New York Voices at the Blue Note. The Pat Martino trio with Joey DeFrancesco and Byron Landham is at Iridium. Trumpeter Brian Lynch's 17-piece Big Band makes its debut tonight at The Jazz Gallery.

Tonight's Knitting Factory schedule includes David Kolker, Moye and Kenny White and saxophonists Avram Fefer's trio with bassist Eric Revis and drummer Igal Foni. Pucci Amanda Jones and her trio are at the Lenox Lounge in Harlem tonight and Saturday.

Soprano saxophonist Jane Ira Bloom's band performs this evening at the American Museum of Natural History's Rose Center for Earth and Space as part of its "Starry Nights: Friday Under the Sphere" series. Tenor saxophonist Eric Alexander's quartet is at Smoke tonight and Saturday. It features David Hazeltine on piano, Louis Hayes on drums and Nat Reeves on bass.


Trumpeter Jack Walrath's band is at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J., tonight and Saturday.


In and around Boston, singer-guitarist John Pizzarelli's trio is at Scullers jazz club tonight and Saturday. Ron Levy's new trio Spank with Fuzz and Eric Kalb of Deep Banana Blackout is at the Middle East in Cambridge tonight. The Bruce Katz band is at Ricky T's Blues Club in Plymouth tonight.


Bassist Avery Sharpe brings his Extended Family: Voices project, featuring singer Jeri Brown, into the Iron Horse Music Hall in Northampton, Mass., tonight.


Pianist Roberta Piket's quartet is at Ortlieb's Jazzhaus in Philadelphia tonight.

Pianist Gonzalo Rubalcaba is at the Bird of Paradise in Ann Arbor, Mich., tonight and Saturday.


The Chicago Cultural Center's JazzFair 2002 continues tonight with the Fred Anderson quartet, Salty Dogs of Chicago, Willie Pickens, George Freeman, Bobby Lewis, Joanie Pallatto and Sparrow, and David Young.

Elsewhere on the Windy City jazz scene, Corky Siegal's Chamber Blues band is at the Jazz Showcase. Skinny Williams is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. In New Orleans tonight, guitarist John Bagnatto is at the Columns. The Potholes Brass Band is at Donna's. Tricia "Sista Teedy" Boutte and A Li'l Deepa are at the Dragon's Den. Ingrid Lucia and the Flying Neutrinos are at El Matador. Leigh 'Lil Queenie' Harris and Dave Ellington team up tonight at Martine's. Social Lubricant is at Nacho Mama's. Thais Clark and her New Orleans Jazzmen are at the Palm Court. Leroy Jones leads the band tonight at Preservation Hall. Brazilian jazz composer and pianist Jovino Santos Neto is at Snug Harbor tonight. Kid Merv leads the early evening jazz jam at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor, and will be followed by singer Sharon Martin. Spyro Gyra is at the House of Blues.

On the California jazz scene, pianist McCoy Tyner's quartet with saxophonist Kenny Garrett, bassist George Mraz and drummer Al Foster is at Yoshi's in Oakland. Trombonist Curtis Fuller's quartet is at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles. Saxophonist James Moody's quintet is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. The Banda Brothers are at Steamers Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. Drummer Steve Smith and saxophonist Michael Zilber bring their quartet into Jazz at Pearl's in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood tonight and Saturday.


Singer Nancy Wilson is in the spotlight at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle through Sunday. Singer Kendra Shank is at Bake's Place in Redmond, Wash., tonight.


Saxophonist Charles McPherson's quartet is at The Cellar in Vancouver, Canada, tonight and Saturday.
