Drummer Nick Fatool was born this day in Milbury, Mass. He worked in Benny Goodman's band from 1939-40 and with Artie Shaw from 1940-41.

Pianist Erroll Garner died this day in 1977. The self-taught player with commanding technique is best remembered for his composition "Misty."

On the New York jazz scene, pianist Eliane Elias's trio with Mark Johnson and Satoshi Takeshi is at Iridium this week. Bassist Santi Debriano and Circle Chant are at the Zinc Bar tonight. Clarinetist Michael White's Original Liberty Jazz Band of New Orleans is at the Village Vanguard through Sunday. Gary Morgan's 'Panamericana' Big Band is at Birdland tonight. Trumpeter Tim Byrnes' quartet is at The Knitting Factory tonight.


In New Orleans tonight, the Manabu Sakei jazz trio is at Checkpoint Charlie along with T-Bone stone. Rebecca Barry is at the Dragon's Den. The Soul Rebels Brass Band is at El Matador. Have Soul Will Travel is at the Funky Butt. Trumpeter Kermit Ruffins brings his Barbecue Swingers into Le Bone Temps Roule. Drummer Johnny Vidacovich's trio at the Old Point tonight includes George Porter Jr., and June Yamagishi. Trumpeter Wendell Brunious leads the band at Preservation Hall. Pianist Victor Atkins is at Snug Harbor. Singer Tricia 'Sista Teedy' Boutte is at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor.

On the California jazz scene, the Jazz Crusaders featuring Wayne Henderson, Wilton Felder and Bobby Lyles are at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood through Saturday. The Paul Johnson quartet is at Steamers Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. The Mark Stock trio with Gary Rowe is at the Cypress Club in San Francisco. Oscar Brown Jr. and Billy Childs are at The Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight through Sunday. Saxophonist Charles Lloyd teams up with pianist Geri Allen tonight through Sunday at Yoshi's in Oakland.


The Jim Ferguson trio is at Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle tonight and Thursday.
