Big band jazz trumpet player and studio musician Marky Markowitz was born this day in Washington in 1923.

Pianist McCoy Tyner was born this day in 1938 in Philadelphia. One of the most percussive pianists on the scene today, Tyner had a strong role in one of the most influential quartets in jazz history. It was the band led by saxophonist John Coltrane.


Looking at today's hip happenings...


Pianist Chick Corea opens the middle week of his three-week run at the Blue Note in celebration of his 60th birthday. There's a new musical context every two nights. He performs duets with vibes player Gary Burton tonight and Wednesday, reunites his Akoustic Band with John Patitucci and Dave Weckl on Thursday and Friday, and brings on his sextet Origin on Saturday and Sunday.

Saxophonist David Murray's octet is at Iridium tonight through Sunday. Pianist Bill Charlap's trio is at the Village Vanguard this week. The Rashid Bakr Quintet and the St. Marta Trio are at the Knitting Factory tonight. David Ostwald's Louis Armstrong Centennial Band warms things up this evening for Rudy Calzado and the Cubarama Afro-Cuban Jazz Orchestra at Birdland. Singer Pucci Amanda Jones is at the Sugar Bar tonight.


Guitarist Vic Juris is in the spotlight tonight at Trumpets in Montclair, N.J.


On the Boston jazz scene, the International Society presents ``Electro-Acoustic Night'' at the Tremont Theatre featuring Twin, the Ellen Band and Andrew Neuman. The Berklee College of Music Rainbow Band presents a concert tonight to benefit the Phil Wilson Scholarship Fund. The trombonist and arranger, a longtime Berklee faculty member, has been leading this premier student jazz unit at Berklee for more than three decades. Tonight's performance will spotlight singer Alisa Miles, trumpeter/vocalist Christine Fawson and Argentine composer Nicolas Sorin.


In Chicago, Hammond B-3 players Joey DeFrancesco and Papa John DeFrancesco open a weeklong organ duel tonight at the Jazz Showcase. John Bany, John Young and Charlie Braugham are at Andy's tonight. Bobby Lewis is at the Backroom. Jimmy Sutton's Four Charms are at the Green Mill. Franz Jackson and his Jazz Entertainers are at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. Von Freeman is at the New Apartment Lounge tonight. Mississippi Heat is at Pops for Champagne. Jackie Allen and Judy Roberts perform in the lunchtime jazz series today at the Chicago Cultural Center's Randolph Café.

On the New Orleans jazz scene, singer Tricia "Sista Teedy" Boutte and pianists Paul Longstreth are at Le Meridien Hotel tonight. The ReBirth Brass Band is at the Maple Leaf. Pete Fountain is at his club in the New Orleans Hilton. Trumpeter Greg Stafford leads the band tonight at Preservation Hall. Roland Guerin, Jason Marsalis and Derek Douget are at Snug Harbor as the trio that they call KHORE. Trumpeter Gregory Davis is at the Storyville District Jazz Parlor with his band.


In California tonight, singer Renee Marie is at the Jazz Bakery in Los Angeles tonight through Sunday. Pianist McCoy Tyner's trio opens a weeklong run at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood. Saxophonist David Sánchez's Band is at Yoshi's in Oakland through Sunday. Randy Caputo presents a Gene Krupa tribute tonight at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton. The Mark Stock Trio is at the Cypress Club in San Francisco.


Vibes player Stefon Harris and pianist Jacky Terrasson bring their quartet into Dimitriou's Jazz Alley in Seattle tonight through Sunday.


BluBeck, guitarist Joe Beck's band with alto saxophonist Blue Lou Marini, is at the A-Trane in Berlin tonight and Wednesday for a live recording session.

On the recording front...

-- Guitarist James Emery is out with a new recording called "Fourth World" on Germany's Between The Lines label. It features reedman Joe Lovano on saxes, clarinet, drums and percussion, singer Judi Silvano on voice, flute and gong, and bassist Drew Gress.

-- Flute player Mark Weinstein, who made his mark in Latin jazz in the 1960s with his "Cuban Roots" recording with Chick Corea, is out with a new CD called "World Trios." It presents him in three different trio contexts that delve into Afro-Caribbean, Brazilian and post-bop jazz. His collaborators are guitarist Romero Lubambo and percussionist Cyro Baptista, guitarist John Paul Bourelly and percussionist and Milton Cardona, and bassist Santi Debriano and drummer Cindy Blackman.
