Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Pianist and composer Scott Joplin, the man known as the King of Ragtime, was born this day in 1868 in Texarkana, Texas. He died in New York in 1917.

Benny Goodman's most popular pianist, Teddy Wilson, was born this day in 1912 in Austin, Texas. He joined Goodman's trio in 1935, becoming one of the first black musicians to appear prominently with white musicians. Wilson, regarded by many as the most important pianist of the swing jazz period, died in July 1986.


Piano and organ player Wild Bill Davis was born this day in 1918 in Glasgow, Mo.


Baritone saxophonist Serge Chaloff was born this day in 1923 and the tenor saxophonist Al Cohn was born in 1925. Both were members of Woody Herman's "Four Brothers" horn section with Stan Getz and Zoot Sims.

On this day in 1933, singer Bessie Smith cut her last record. She was 38 at the time. The song, for the Okeh label, was called "I'm Down in the Dumps."

Singer Michelle Willson and her Evil Gal Orchestra are at the Thirsty Ear Tavern in Columbus, Ohio, tonight.

Buddy Greco sings with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra tonight at the Fairmount Temple in Cleveland.


On the Chicago jazz scene, trumpeter Roy Hargrove is at the Jazz Showcase through Sunday. Carmen Stokes winds down weeklong run at the Backroom. The Josh Quinlan quartet is at the Futureworld Cybercafe tonight. Franz Jackson and his Entertainers open the evening at the Green Mill, and the Sabertooth Organ Quartet continues it from midnight until 5 a.m. Bopology is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. Guitarist Henry Johnson's Organ Express is at Michael's Jazz Bistro in Glen Ellyn tonight. Rankinfyle is at Philander's in Oak Park. The Corky McClerkin quartet is at Pops for Champagne.

In New Orleans tonight, singer Christina Machado is at Cobalt, New Orleans Streetbeat is at the Crescent City Brewhouse and Have Soul Will Travel is at Le Bon Temps Roule. Trumpeter Wendell Brunious leads the band tonight at Preservation Hall. Singer Philip Manuel is at the Red Room tonight. The Albert Ankrum Project is at the Louisiana Music Factory and the Hot 8 Brass Band is at the French Market Complex this afternoon.


There's a tribute to late Salsa king and jazz great Tito Puente tonight at Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, in San Francisco. It will feature the Puente Orchestra and special guests Dave Valentin, Carlos "Patato" Valdes, Giovanni Hidalgo, Chocolate Armenteros, Ray Barretto, Larry Harlow, Jimmy Bosch, Yomo Toro, Francisco Aguabella, and West Coast-based Latin jazz players John Santos, Orestes Vilato, Karl Perazzo, John Calloway and Rebeca Mauleon. The concert will benefit the Multicultural Foundation of Technology and Science at Foundation of Technology & Science at Mission High School and the National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences' MusiCares program.

Saxophonist Dave Koz and Friends bring their month-long "Smooth Jazz Christmas" tour to the East County Performing Arts Center in El Cajon tonight. The Susie Hansen Latin jazz band is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. The Al Plank trio is at Pairs Restaurant in Napa. Danny Spencer, Paul Breslin and Larry Vuckovich team up tonight at the Spiedo Ristorante in San Jose. Vicki Burns is at Slate's Supper Club in Walnut Creek. Bobbe Norris and Larry Dunlap are at the Cetrella Restaurant in Half Moon Bay. Sea of Stories is at Jupiter in Berkeley. In San Francisco, trombonist Wayne Wallace's septet is featured tonight in the Jazz at the Presidio series at the Main Post Chapel. Don Alberts is at the Cypress Club. Songo is at Butterfly.
