Jazz Notes: Goings on in the jazz world

Trombonist Tyree Glenn was born in 1912 in Corsicana, Texas. He was a fixture in the Cab Calloway and Duke Ellington bands for many years. He died in 1974.

Composer and arranger Johnny Mandel was born this day in 1925 in New York. Like Tyree Glenn, Mandel played trombone. He also played trumpet. Mandel first came to prominence as an arranger for Woody Herman. His most famous composition, "The Shadow of Your Smile," was written for the 1965 movie "The Sandpiper."


Bass player Ray Drummond, nicknamed "The Bulldog," was born this day in 1946 in Brookline, Mass. His jazz career began on the West Coast after several cycles in which he worked in corporate America as an insurance and food service executive.

Guitarist Dave Stryker and alto saxophonist Steve Slagle bring their quintet into The Jazz Gallery tonight to celebrate the release of Stryker's new CD "Changing Times."


Trumpeter Greg Hopkins' quartet featuring guitarist Mick Goodrick is at Mama Josie's in Waltham, Mass., tonight and Saturday.


On the Philadelphia jazz scene, native sons pat Martino, Joey DeFrancesco and Byron Landham team tonight and Saturday at Chris's Cafe in Center City. The Gina Roche quartet is at Zanzibar Blue tonight and Saturday.


Keyboard player Alex Bugnon and his band are at Blues Alley in Washington, D.C., tonight through Sunday.

In and around Cleveland, singer Buddy Greco teams up tonight with the Cleveland Jazz Orchestra at the Cuyahoga Community College West Campus. Vibes player Roy Ayers and his band are at Peabody's Downunder tonight and Saturday.


On the metropolitan Chicago jazz scene, the Chris Lega-Pat Mallinger quintet is at Andy's tonight. Carmen Stokes is at the Backroom for two more nights. Violinist Diane Delin's quartet is at the Deep Blue Prairie Rock Brewing Company in Schaumburg through Saturday. Franz Jackson and his Jazz Entertainers are at the Green Mill tonight and Saturday. Skinny Williams is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium tonight. Guitarist Henry Johnson's Organ Express quartet is at Michael's Jazz Bistro in Glen Ellyn tonight and Saturday. The King Fleming trio is at Philander's of Oak Park tonight. The Kelly Brand-Suzanne Palmer Quartet is at Pops for Champagne tonight.


Saxophonist Dave Koz and Friends open their month-long "Smooth Jazz Christmas" tour tonight at the Hyatt Regency Incline Village in Lake Tahoe.

Pianist Bill Cunliffe's trio is at Steamer's Jazz Café in Fullerton tonight. Manhattan Transfer singer Alan Paul's trio is at the Catalina Bar and Grill in North Hollywood tonight through Sunday. Tuck and Patti are at Yoshi's in Oakland through Sunday. The Dick Conte trio is at Pairs Restaurant in Napa tonight. Pete Magadini, Larry Vuckovich and Nat Johnson team up tonight at the Spiedo Ristorante in San Jose. Tim Hockenberry is at The Plush Room.
