Today is Nov. 11.
Composer Hoagy Carmichael was born this date in 1899 in Bloomington, Ind. An associate of Bix Beiderbecke and the Dorsey Brothers, Carmichael is best known for the terrific standards he wrote, including "Stardust," "Skylark" and "Georgia On My Mind." "Stardust" was first recorded in 1927. When Hoagy Carmichael wrote the piece, it was a fast, ragtime-style tune. After he worked out a slower arrangement, it became one of the most-recorded tunes in the jazz and popular music repertoires.
Pianist and singer Mose Allison was born this day in 1927 in Tippo, Miss. He's a strong and sophisticated promoter of the country blues with a following that transcends the blues and jazz.
Singer Ernestine Anderson was born this day in 1928 in Houston, Texas. Her warmth and her blues intensity have developed a huge following for Anderson, who continues to pack clubs around the world.
