Harris tried piano, tenor saxophone and trumpet before settling on the trombone, which he played with ingenuity, vigor and humor. He toured with Gene Krupa, Ray McKinley and Benny Goodman's bands in the late 1930s and early '40s. His best work came in the Woody Herman band off and on between 1944 and 1959. He died in 1973. Advertisement Trumpeter and Latin jazz bandleader Chico O'Farrill was born this day in 1921 in Havana, Cuba. He settled in New York in the late 1940s and had a major impact as an arranger on Latin albums by Machito, Dizzy Gillespie, Art Farmer and Gato Barbieri. He has had a major career revival over in the late 1990s. He died earlier this year. Advertisement Singer Cleo Laine was born this day in 1927 in Southall, Middlesex, England. She has had a long, successful career since she began fronting the John Dankworth Big Band in 1952. Her recording "Cleo at Carnegie Hall" won a Grammy Award in 1986. Musical Director Arturo O'Farrill Jr., leads the Chico O'Farrill Afro-Cuban Jazz Big Band at Birdland tonight. Saxophonist Glenn Guidone, pianist Ted Rosenthal and drummer Matt Wilson are featured at today's jazz brunch at Papa-Razzi in Westbury. The Knitting Factory schedule tonight at its eclectic lower Manhattan performances spaces includes Everything Bagels and Next Tribe. In and around Boston, tenor saxophonist Don Braden's band is in concert tonight at Wellesley College, in Wellesley. Trombonist Phil Woods and the Berklee College of Music Rainbow Band that he has directed for many years perform tonight at Berklee as special guests of the U.S. Army Field Band's Jazz Ambassadors big band. The Berklee Performance Center concert will feature big band jazz and patriotic songs. Wilson will also be guest soloist with the Jazz Ambassadors, performing his arrangements of "Thad," a tribute to Thad Jones, and "Love for Sale," which arranged for the Belgium Radio Big Band. On the Chicago jazz scene, the 2001 edition of the Asian American Jazz festival concludes tonight at the Museum of Contemporary Art with performances by Kawabata Makoto, Saadet Turkoz, Elliot Sharp and Eyvind Kang. Saxophonist David Sanchez and his Melaza sextet wind down a weeklong run at the Jazz Showcase tonight. The Sonny Turner quintet is at Joe's BeBop Café and Jazz Emporium. On the New Orleans jazz scene, singer Topsy Chapman and pianist David Torkanowsky team up at Donna's tonight. Sydney Beaumont and Larry Sieberth perform the songs of Judy Garland at Le Chat Noir. Harold 'Duke' Dejean's Olympia Brass Band is featured tonight at Preservation Hall. Ingrid Lucia headlines the Shim Sham Club. Triptych is at Snug Harbor.
