Carol Burnett’s awarded $1.6 million in libel damages

Entertainer Carol Burnett is all smiles on March 26, 1981, after a Los Angeles jury ruled that the National Enquirer libeled her in a gossip column implying she was drunk in a Washington restaurant and assessed $1.6 million against the tabloid. She had originally sued for $10 million but received $1.6 M, which comes to $24,615 a word for the 65-word item. (UPI Photo/John Barr/Files)
