50TH ANNIVERSARY OF BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION OF TOPKEA

50TH ANNIVERSARY OF BROWN VS. BOARD OF EDUCATION OF TOPKEA

The auditoriums at Robert Russa Moton High School, left, and at Farmville High School, right, were presented as evidence in the district court case Davis et al. v. County School Board of Prince Edward County, VA, et al. to illustrate the inequality of the all-black Robert Russa Moton and the all-white Farmville. The Davis case became part of the Brown vs. Board of Education of Topeka case when it when it was appealed to the Supreme Court. The decision by the Supreme Court in May of 1954 was delivered by Chief Justice Earl Warren who stated "in the field of public education the doctrine of 'separate but equal' has no place. Separate educational facilities are inherently unequal." This and other documents about the case will be on display to the public at the National Archives in Washington from April 16 to July 5.
