RARE ARAKAN FOREST TURTLE HATCHED AT ZOO ATLANTA

A seven-day-old rare Arakan forest turtle has hatched at Zoo Atlanta, the only facility in the world to successfully breed the species, at the zoo's House of Reptiles in Atlanta on May 1, 2007. Once believed to be extinct for almost 100 years, the turtles were found in the mid-90s in Asian food markets. Only 12 specimens, in four institutions, exist in North America. While two hatchlings have not survived in recent days, a fourth egg is in incubation and expected to hatch soon. (UPI Photo/John Dickerson)
