Governor Edmund G. Brown Jr. returns from energy and trade talks with Mexico

LOS ANGELES: Calif. Gov. Edmund G. Brown, Jr. just back from Mexico where he discussed energy and trade with President Jose Lopez Portillo, lost no time on July 31, 1979 firing a candidate-like salvo at President Carter in a news conference at Los Angeles International Airport. “I don't want to have repeated the mistakes that the Carter Administration made two years ago,” he said, referring to Energy Secretary James Schlesinger's veto of a U.S. purchase of Mexican natural gas in 1977. While Brown was in Mexico 7/30 his aides in Sacramento announced Brown was running for President. (UPI Photo/Alan Zanger/Files)
