Queen Mother Elizabeth takes control of Jet Airliner Comet

In the first pilot's seat, Britain's Queen Mother Elizabeth handles the controls of the jet airliner Comet as it sweeps through the skies over Europe on June 2, 1952. With the Queen Mother on the flight deck is test pilot John Cunningham (partially obscured). The photo was made as the plane sped 500 miles an hour over France. Princess Margaret was also aboard the Comet during the flight. When she got to Britain, the Queen Mother sent a message about her experience at the controls to the number 600 (City of London) Squadron of the Royal Air Force, of which she is the honorary air commodore.
