The Wright Brothers National Memorial near Kitty Hawk

A 60-foot Wright Brothers Monument atop a 90-foot sand dune commemorates the hundreds of glider flights that preceded the first powered flight of the Wright brothers at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on July 25, 2015. Orville and Wilbur Wright did their glider tests from 1900 and flew the world's first airplane on this stretch of sandy beach on December 17, 1903. The first flight that day traveled 120 feet and lasted 12 seconds, the fourth went 852 feet and lasted 59 seconds. Photo by Pat Benic/UPI
