The Wright Brothers National Memorial near Kitty Hawk

A sculpture called "December 17, 1903" shows John Daniels, who took the famous photo, as it replicates the scene of the first flight of the Wright brothers at the Wright Brothers National Memorial in Kill Devil Hills near Kitty Hawk on the Outer Banks of North Carolina on July 25, 2015. The sculpture depicting Orville aboard weighs 10,000 pounds, whereas the Wright brothers plane "Flyer 1" weighed 605 pounds. The original plane is at the Smithsonian in Washington, DC. Orville and Wilbur Wright did their glider tests from 1900 and flew the world's first airplane on this stretch of sandy beach on December 17, 1903. The first flight that day traveled 120 feet and lasted 12 seconds, the fourth went 852 feet and lasted 59 seconds. Photo by Pat Benic/UPI
