Iran prepares for Yalda the longest night of the year
Iranian fruit sellers set up their produce in a shop in Tehran, Iran on December 20, 2007. Iranians celebrate the longest night of the year known as Shabe Yalda (Yalda Night) or Shabe Chelle. The celebration recognizes the symbolic victory of light over darkness and following the night of Yalda, days become longer. Following the Iranian calendar reform of 1925, which pegged some seasonal events to specific days of the calendar, Yalda came to be celebrated on the 1st day of the 10th month.
