Stars and Skulls: New ESO Image Reveals an Eerie Nebula
This image, created from images in the Digitized Sky Survey 2 and released on October 30, 2020, shows the sky around NGC 246, the Skull Nebula, which is visible in blue at the very center of the frame. The Skull Nebula, also known as NGC 246, lies about 1600 light-years away from Earth in the southern constellation of Cetus (The Whale) and is the first known to be associated with a pair of closely bound stars orbited by a third outer star.
