USS GEORGE WASHINGTON HEADS FOR THE GULF. SUEZ CANAL TRANSIT
NIM97112002 - 20 NOVEMBER 1997 - IN THE SUEZ CANAL, EGYPT: The Ticonderoga class cruiser USS Normandy (CG 60) (Front), the nuclear powered fast attack submarine USS Annapolis (SSN 760) (center), and the fast combat support ship USS Seattle (AOE 3) (rear) transit the Suez Canal, November 16. All three U.S. ships are part of the nuclear powered aircraft carrier USS George Washington (CVN 73) battle group. Following a Presidential order to head for the Arabian Gulf region, elements of the George Washington battle group led by the carrier immediately left their regularly scheduled station in the Mediterranean and began the 7 day passage to the Gulf, which starts with a Suez Canal transit. George Washington will join the USS Nimitz battle group already on station. Both will enforce UN sanctions against Iraq by patrolling the ÒNo-Fly ZoneÓ under Operation Southern Watch. cc/Jason Dent-USN UPI.
