SDP2001051402 - 14 MAY 2001 - SAN DIEGO, CALIFORNIA, USA: U.S. Coast Guard personal stand guard May 14, 2001, during a news conference at the Naval Station in San Diego, California, for the largest cocaine seizure in maritime history. 26,397 pounds was found on board the Svesda Maru, a 152 foot fishing vessel registered in Belize, resulting in the arrest of the eight crewmen on board, eight Ukrainians and two Russians. The vessel was boarded and seized May 3 1,500 miles south of San Diego after becoming suspect for the lack of proper fishing gear on board, and was then towed to San Diego. rlw/ec/EARL S.
