SDP2002101202- SAN ONOFRE, California, October 12 (UPI) - A radioactive part of a nuclear reactor is remove from it's protective housing, October 12, 2002 at the San Onofre nuclear power plant north of San Diego, California. Unit One which was built in 1962 is being decommissioned. The steel, cylinder-shaped nuclear fuel storage vessel is 35 feet tall, 15 feet wide and 8 inches thick and weighing over 400 tons will be shipped to Barnwell, South Carolina to be buried with other radioactive waste in a registered facility. This reactor at the San Onofre plant, which has two other reactors, is only the fourth to be decommissioned in the United States since the development of the nuclear energy industry. ec / EARL S.
