USS Ranger heads to scrap yard
The USS Ranger is towed from Puget Sound Naval Shipyard's Inactive Ship Maintenance Facility in Bremerton, WA. on March 5, 2015. The carrier is en route to scraped at International Shipbreaking in Texas. The aircraft carrier was active from 1957 to 1993, when it entered the mothball fleet. The Navy announced a deal Dec. 22 to pay a penny and the value of the ship's scrap metal to take it away. It must make a five-month, 16,000-mile trip around South America because it can't fit through the Panama Canal. Photo by Jim Bryant/UPI
