Traders work in the S&P 500 stock index options pit at the Chicago Board Options Exchange on August 8, 2011 in Chicago. The S&P 500 closed at 1,119.46, down 79 points or 6.7 percent, and the Dow Jones industrials closed at 10,809, down 634 points or 5.5 percent, its biggest one-day point drop since December 2008.
