Tourists visit North Korean border
A North Korean man, after selling contraband pickled eggs, cigarettes, alcohol and ginseng to Korean, Japanese and Chinese tourists, is visited by North Korean border patrol soldiers on the Yalu River, north of Dandong, China's largest border city with North Korea, in Liaoning Province, on May 28, 2015. After sales to tourists, the soldiers swoop in to take 99 percent of the sales. A boatman can sell as much as $4,000 worth of goods a day to tourist boats, most of which goes to the North Korean border patrol soldiers. China remains North Korea's most important ally, providing Pyongyang with most of its food and energy supplies and comprises over sixty percent of its total trade volume. North Korea's economic dependence on China continues to grow due to international sanctions, as indicated by the significant trade imbalance between the two countries. Photo by Stephen Shaver/UPI
