Meat production packing houses closing due to coronavirus
Cows wait to get closer for food at the Clover Meadows Beef Farm in Wildwood, Missouri on Thursday, May 7, 2020. Owner Matt Hardecke says he may have to keep some of the cattle longer than normal rather than send them to a slaughterhouse, due a problem in the chain since several meat packing plants are shutting down because of positive testing for COVID-19. Many grocery stores are limiting meat purchases to three or four packages of beef, citing the rash of closures at processing plants, resulting in short supply. Cows are sent to slaughter when they weigh about 1400 pounds or about 23 months old. Photo by Bill Greenblat/UPI
