MEERKAT BABY IN SAN DIEGO
A pair of meerkats watched over their 2-month-old offspring at the San Diego Zoo on September 13, 2005. One of the unique characteristics of meerkats is that there is always a sentry to warn against danger while other members of the group sunbathe or forage. Meerkats live in the Southern portion of Africa that is dominated by the Kalahari Desert. They grow to be about 12 inches tall, weighing no more than two pounds. (UPI Photo/Ken Bohn/San Diego Zoo)
