Steam Engine of the USS Monitor recovered
WAX2001071704 - 17 JULY 2001 - WASHINGTON, DC, USA: Navy divers, working with archaeologists from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) on the Manson Gulf Derrick Barge WOTAN, recovered the steam engine of the historic USS Monitor from the waters within the Monitor National Marine Sanctuary, 16 miles off the coast of Cape Hatteras, N.C. The engineÕs recovery marks a major milestone for the Monitor 2001 Expeditions and NOAAÕs long-range plan to recover and preserve the Civil War-era ironclad vessel.
