HURRICANE RITA REACHES CATEGORY 5
At 2:55 p.m. CDT, on Wednesday, September 21, 2005, the National Weather Service Tropical Prediction Center and National Hurricane Center in Miami, Florida, posted a tropical cyclone update on Hurricane Rita. Data from reconnaissance aircraft indicate that Rita has reached Category Five intensity with estimated maximum sustained surface winds of 165 mph. This image was made September 20, 2005 at 2:35 p.m. ET, as Hurricane Rita's sustained winds reached 100 miles per hour passing between the Florida Keys and Cuba by the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on NASAÕs Aqua satellite.
