Special tradition to commemorate Ashura in Khorramabad, Iran

Iranian Shiite Muslim women participate in a traditional religious ceremony in Khorramabad city in Lorestan province, 499 km (310,13 Miles) far from west of Tehran, Iran on January 18, 2007. Ashura is the peak of ten days of mourning during the Islamic month of Muharram, the first month of the lunar calendar, when Shiite Muslims mourn the slaughter of Imam Hussein which accured 1366 years ago in what is now Karbala in southern Iraq. Mourners mix rose water with the riddled clay in a 12-square meter area. They gently beat their shoulders with chains while their heads and shoulders have been covered by this clay.
