SAN DIEGO ZOO APE TURNS TWO
Makasi, a two-year-old bonobo, celebrates his second birthday, complete with presents, in his habitat at the San Diego Zoo on March 22, 2006. The presents consisted of paper bags and cardboard boxes filled with popcorn, peas, walnuts and biscuits that the bonobos only receive on special occasions. He shared his birthday bounty with five other members of his troop. Bonobos are a very rare, and critically endangered species of great ape native to the forests and lowlands of the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The San Diego Zoo is one of only a handful of zoos in the U.S to exhibit and breed these intelligent apes. (UPI Phpoto/Ken Bohn, Zoological Society of San Diego)
