Students test their skills at the Scripps National Spelling Bee(27 images)

Young students from across the United States participated in the finals of the 90th annual Scripps National Spelling Bee on June 1 in Oxon Hill, Md.

Nearly 300 participants entered this year's competition to battle it out for a grand prize of $40,000 in cash, a Scripps National Spelling Bee engraved trophy, a $2,500 U.S. savings bond, a complete reference library and $400 of reference works, including a 1768 Encyclopedia Britannica Replica Set Deluxe Edition and a three-year membership to Britannica Online Premium.
