Carmageddon in Los Angeles (15 images)

The unprecedented closure of Interstate 405, a highway that carries about a half-million vehicles every weekend, was completed well ahead of schedule, enabling traffic on the freeway linking the West Side of Los Angeles and the San Fernando Valley to flow once again.

One of the busiest freeways in California, the 405, stands vacant as workers demolish the south side of Mulholland overpass on the freeway during the 53-hour total freeway closure. The massive traffic disruptions expected throughout the region did not materialize. The bridge is being demolished as part of a $1 billion project to add carpool lanes and make other improvements along the 405 freeway from Orange County to the city of San Fernando. UPI/Jim Ruymen
